Dementia Empathy Training UK

Lived Experiences is a specialist dementia training provider helping care, healthcare, education and workplace teams develop a deeper understanding of how everyday situations can become confusing, frustrating or overwhelming for a person living with dementia.
Our training combines dementia awareness with structured immersive exercises, guided discussion and reflection. The aim is not to claim that participants can experience dementia for themselves. Instead, we use experiential learning to challenge assumptions and encourage people to consider care and communication from a different perspective.

Important statement

No simulation can reproduce the lived experience of dementia, and every person experiences dementia differently. Our immersive exercises are designed to encourage reflection on some of the challenges that can affect everyday life and to help participants consider how communication, environment and care approaches may influence a person’s experience.

What We Offer

Training That Changes How You Care

Guided Immersion

Participants complete everyday tasks while navigating sensory changes, confusion, restriction, and cognitive overload gaining firsthand understanding through lived experience.

Expert-Led Debrief

Every session is guided by a trained facilitator with professional experience and insight. Reflection helps transform awareness into meaningful, lasting change.

Measurable Impact

Pre and post-session assessments demonstrate attitude and behaviour change. Documented outcomes for your training records and compliance needs.

More Than an Empathy Suit

The equipment is only one part of the learning. A typical Lived Experiences programme lasts approximately three hours and combines preparation, an immersive experiential component, structured activities, facilitated debrief and practical reflection.

Understand

Explore dementia, individuality and why a person’s experience cannot be reduced to a list of symptoms.

Experience and Observe

Take part in carefully facilitated activities designed to prompt reflection on sensory, physical and cognitive challenges.

Reflect

Discuss what felt difficult, confusing or overwhelming and consider why.

Apply

Translate the experience into practical changes in communication, pace, environment, choice, dignity and support.

For Anyone Who Cares.

We deliver sessions for care homes, health and social care providers, NHS and healthcare teams, universities and colleges, medical and nursing students, businesses and other organisations seeking stronger dementia awareness.

Care Homes & NHS

Equip your care staff with the deep empathy that transforms daily care reducing distress for residents and improving staff wellbeing.

Medical & Nursing Education

Give students what no textbook can the embodied experience of what their future patients live with every day.

Corporate & DEI Teams

Build a dementia-friendly workplace, support carers in your workforce, and demonstrate meaningful inclusion.

Training that lasts long after the suit comes off.

We do not simply provide equipment and leave participants to interpret the experience for themselves. Preparation, professional facilitation and debrief are central to the programme. The most valuable part of experiential learning is often the conversation afterwards: what happened, why it mattered and what could be done differently in practice.

The breakaway training helped me feel more confident and showed me how to keep myself safe without harming the service user. The trainer made the learning both teacher-led and student-centred, which helped me understand the techniques better.

The trainer is the best, I learnt new Breakaway tactics in a very easy way. It was easy to assimilate because the trainer knows how to catch attention and ensure you understand what was said.
